A longitudinal section cuts a building lengthwise, so this drawing shows the interior arrangement of the Providence government building at Broad and Long Wharf Streets: the post office and customs functions on the lower floors and the courtroom above, along with the spaces and heights between them. Federal buildings like this combined a post office, customs house, and courtroom under one roof, reflecting how the national government handled commerce, mail, and justice in port cities during the nineteenth century. Drawings of this kind were used by the Treasury Department's architects and contractors to plan construction and check room sizes, ceiling heights, and stair placement. The section gives a clearer picture of the building's internal organization than a street-facing view would.
