The Justices' Library sits inside the U.S. Supreme Court building on Capitol Hill, the marble headquarters that opened in 1935 after the Court spent its first century and a half in the Capitol. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio known for documenting government offices and interiors. The record dates it to about 1950, though that date comes from an older caption card and has not been verified. Look at the rows of shelving and the reading tables, which show how the room was built for long hours of legal research.
