This is an exterior general view of the Jefferson Building, the main structure of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., which was named for Thomas Jefferson. Completed in 1897, it was built to relieve crowding in the Capitol, where the library had been housed, and its Beaux-Arts design, with ornate carved stonework, statuary, and a prominent dome, was meant to show the nation's commitment to learning. The record does not give a date for this print, so the view is best read as a general record of how the building presented itself from the street.
