Four employees work in this unidentified office, a small scene of clerical life inside the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The building opened in 1897 as the library's main home, and its ornate Italian Renaissance Revival interiors were meant to show the nation's intellectual ambitions, but its many offices were working spaces where staff catalogued, corresponded, and processed materials. The caption card records no date, and the identities of the people pictured are unknown, so the scene is best read as a general view of the building's everyday administrative life.
