This view shows the General Post Office building in Washington, D.C., photographed on June 14, 1860, and preserved in an album assembled by Benjamin Brown French. French served as commissioner of public buildings in the capital, so his collection documents federal structures under his supervision. The Post Office Department occupied a Greek Revival building at F and Seventh Streets, completed in the late 1830s and designed by Robert Mills, who also worked on the nearby Patent Office. The print is a salted paper photograph, an early process whose soft, warm tones are worth noticing.
