A printed letterhead for the United States Patent Office, with an engraved view of its Washington, D.C., building, is the subject here, and the picture shows how the agency presented itself on official paper. Architect Robert Mills designed the building in the Greek Revival style, and construction began in 1836 and continued for years. The building housed the Patent Office's records and models for much of the nineteenth century. The caption card gives no date, but engraved letterheads of this kind were common in government and business correspondence before the turn of the twentieth century, and this print is a photograph of that engraving.
