Paul Rohland's mural in the Mt. Union, Pennsylvania, post office stands out for its river, bridge and mountain backdrop, scenery that would have been familiar to the townspeople who saw it daily. Murals like this were commissioned in the 1930s under the federal Section of Fine Arts, which placed paintings in post offices to bring art into ordinary public life during the Depression. The photograph, dated between 1933 and 1941, records the work as it hung in the building. Worth noticing is how the artist tied the community to its own valley scenery.
