Few views of Washington's Union Station capture the building before it was finished quite like this one, which shows workers raising the last steel members of the concourse roof at the west end. Designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907, the station was among the largest construction projects in the capital at the time, and its vast vaulted concourse was meant to impress arriving travelers with the scale of the new national railroad hub. The photograph, dating to about 1906, records the final stage of that work, when the enormous steel framework was being completed overhead. Notice the open framing and the figures at work, which give a sense of the labor behind the building's grand interior.
