Union Station in Washington, D.C., was still new when this exterior view was made, around May 1908, with the date recorded as approximate. Designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907, the Beaux-Arts terminal consolidated rail service that had been spread across several smaller stations, and its marble facade and grand scale were meant to present the capital to arriving travelers. The photograph was taken by the Wurts Brothers studio, which specialized in views of buildings and streets in the capital. Its record notes that the details come from an old caption card and may have been revised since, so the exact date should be read with that in mind.
