The Treasury Building pictured here sits on the north side of the White House grounds, facing Pennsylvania Avenue, and it was the oldest of the large federal office buildings in the capital by 1910. Its granite and marble exterior, with the long colonnaded facade and the Greek Revival detailing, reflected the government's early practice of housing its departments in monumental stone. The American Press Association, a commercial news-photo service, produced this view, so it was likely made for newspaper and magazine reproduction rather than as a fine-art study. Its exterior record suits a reader interested in how the capital's civic architecture was documented in the early twentieth century.
