The detail here is the row of three ornamental gates that frame the exterior, which the caption card identifies as the subject, set against the Department of Commerce Building on Constitution Avenue in Washington. The building was completed around 1932, when the federal government was constructing a large group of monumental office buildings along the avenue. Its austere limestone facade reflects the stripped classical style favored for federal architecture of the period. The gates and their metalwork are the kind of detail that shows how the designers paired function with formal, dignified ornament.
