The Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, shown from the outside in a photochrom print made around 1898. Its sprawling Greek Revival and later additions sit just east of the White House, and the building housed the federal government's money-management offices for much of the nineteenth century. The photochrom process, a color method adapted from Swiss lithography, was popular in the 1890s for turning photographs into vivid tourist views. The Detroit Photographic Company, which issued this image, was among the firms that produced such prints for the American market, so the picture captures both a federal landmark and a moment in commercial color printing.
