The south front of the Capitol, the side facing the city's southern grounds, is less often pictured than the familiar east steps, and this view shows the building's long west-to-east rhythm of wings and terraces. Washington laid the cornerstone in 1793, and British forces burned the building in 1814 before it was rebuilt. The cast-iron dome completed in the 1860s gave the complex the silhouette seen here. The record gives no date for this print, so its exact year is uncertain, but the view shows a building that had long served as the seat of Congress.
