This print shows the principal front of the United States Capitol as an architectural elevation, a flat, measured view that records the building's design rather than how it looked from any particular spot. The east front was the side meant to face the city, and its design traces to William Thornton's winning entry in the 1792 competition, with later work by Benjamin Latrobe, Charles Bulfinch, and Thomas U. Walter. The record gives no date, and the associated name, Busby, comes from an unverified shelflist card, so the print's exact origin is uncertain. Elevations like this one were used to show builders and the public the proportions of the planned or completed building.
