The Capitol Rotunda in Washington is the subject here, and it is one of the most recognizable interior spaces in the country. The rotunda sits at the center of the Capitol building, beneath the great cast-iron dome completed during the Civil War era, and it serves as a ceremonial hall where national events, lying-in-state ceremonies and tours have long taken place. This c1890 photomechanical print reflects the late nineteenth-century interest in documenting federal architecture, when such reproductions brought views of the nation's landmarks into homes, schools and libraries. Look closely at the scale of the space and the paintings and sculpture that line its walls.
