Looking across the floor from the northwest, this view shows the chamber where the U.S. House of Representatives has met since 1857, when it moved into the south wing of the Capitol after the building was extended. Desks are arranged in a semicircle facing the Speaker's rostrum, and public galleries rise along the walls above the floor. The record gives no date for the photograph, so the exact year is unknown, but the room kept much of its mid-nineteenth-century character for decades, which makes views like this useful for studying how legislative spaces were furnished and used.
