This photograph shows a small-scale model, or maquette, for the sculpture *Landing of the Pilgrims*, planned for the east pediment of the south wing of the Capitol, where the House of Representatives met. The model let artists and officials judge the composition, the crowding of figures, and how the group would read from below before any costly marble was cut. The Pilgrims' 1620 arrival at Plymouth was a favorite national subject in the 1850s, when the Capitol's expansion was turning the building into a showcase of American history. The print comes from the album of Benjamin Brown French, the commissioner in charge of public buildings, who documented the work.
