The east portico of the United States Capitol is the long colonnade facing the rising sun, the side that Capitol visitors approach from the Hill's eastern grounds and where presidents have taken the oath of office at inaugurations since the 19th century. The Capitol's east front was built in stages over several decades, and its portico has long been the building's most recognizable ceremonial entrance. The caption card does not record a date, so the print's exact age is unknown, but it likely shows the building as it looked in the era when its columns and steps were the everyday public approach to the seat of Congress.
