This view of the Capitol's east front, the building's principal facade, is dated circa 1854, a period when the complex was changing rapidly. Congress had begun enlarging the north and south wings in 1851, while the central section, first designed by William Thornton and later rebuilt under Charles Bulfinch, remained the core of the building. The shelflist card gives the date and lists the name "East," which the record marks as unverified, so the maker and exact date are uncertain. Prints like this one show how the front looked before the dome reached its final form.
