Taken from the terrace, this view shows the west front of the United States Capitol, the side that faced the Mall and the city below before the building's later expansions. The print is a salted paper photograph, an early process that gives images a soft, warm tone, and it survives in an album assembled by Benjamin Brown French, who held federal building posts in Washington during the years the Capitol was being enlarged and its dome was rising. Its date range, from 1853 to 1878, places it in that period of construction, when the building was a changing symbol of the young nation's government.
