Federal soldiers escort a group of Black students through the front entrance of Little Rock Central High School in this view, a moment that captured the standoff over school integration in Arkansas. The students, later known as the Little Rock Nine, were admitted under a federal court order after Governor Orval Faubus used the Arkansas National Guard to block them in September 1957. President Dwight D. Eisenhower responded by sending paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division to enforce the ruling and protect the students. Ebony published the photograph in its January 1958 issue, bringing the confrontation to a national readership.
