Taken from the Tigris, this view places the Imperial high school in Baghdad against the river that ran past the city. The print belongs to an album of Ottoman imperial schools, assembled during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909 and promoted state-run education across the empire. Its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, a sign that the pictures were meant for readers beyond the empire's own officials. The building and the river together record a government effort to bring modern schooling to a provincial capital.
