Boys in drill formation at Technical High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, are the subject of this June 1916 photograph by Lewis W. Hine. Hine spent much of his career documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, and he took this picture at a time when school cadet corps were a familiar part of American secondary education. In 1916, as the country debated military preparedness before its entry into World War I, drill training like this drew wide public attention. The rows of uniformed students offer a useful look at how schools prepared young men for military life.
