Fifteen students were in attendance at the Jeffers School near Loveland, Colorado, on November 30, 1915, according to the caption, with more expected to arrive. Lewis Hine made the photograph for the National Child Labor Committee, which sent him across the country to document working children and the schools they often missed. In farming districts like this one, attendance commonly dropped during the autumn harvest, when children were needed in the fields, and the caption's note that more pupils were still to come hints at that uneven rhythm.
