A mule named Sallie and a boy named Harry, a driver for the Maryland Coal Co. mine near Sand Lick in Grafton, West Virginia, appear together in this October 1908 photograph. The original caption card notes that the boy, probably about 12, was wary of being photographed because he feared it might lead to him being sent to school. Lewis Hine, who documented child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, is credited as the photographer based on the collection's provenance. Mule drivers like Harry hauled loaded coal cars through the mine passages, work that kept many boys out of school in the early twentieth century.
