In 1912, the Ceru family at 143 Thompson Street, near a New York tenement, made artificial leaves in a cramped attic that also housed a dog and a cat. The record notes that the five-year-old helped with the work and complained of being tired, while her near-sighted sister, about 10, worked until 9 P.M. some nights and kept her glasses on a shelf when she was home. The photographer was most likely Lewis Hine, who documented child labor for the National Child Labor Committee and used scenes like this to press for reform. The picture's point is that the work followed the children home.
