Allgater, the Haverford, Pennsylvania, home of Horatio Gates Lloyd, is shown here from a side entrance, a view that reveals the everyday face of the house rather than its formal front. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent American photographer of the early twentieth century, made the picture between about 1918 and 1923 and catalogued it in her numbered collection. Haverford lies on the Main Line west of Philadelphia, where prosperous families built substantial suburban houses around that time. The porch in the subject list was a common feature of such homes, offering shade and a sheltered place between the house and its grounds.
