An entrance gate marks the home of a Korean minister of war in this stereograph, made around 1904. Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that produced and sold stereoscopic views in large numbers, issued such cards for home viewers who wanted glimpses of distant places. The year was a tense one for Korea, as the Russo-Japanese War broke out in February 1904 and rival powers pressed for influence over the peninsula. The library's record notes that its caption details come from an old card and have not been verified, so the identity of the residence and its occupant should be read with that caution.
