A courtyard in the home of a local policeman on San Michele Street in Trapani, on the western coast of Sicily, is the detail that sets this stereograph apart from the many views of Italian streets and towns in the collection. Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that issued this card around 1906, sold stereo views in large numbers to households and schools, and their travel series often presented everyday domestic life as a window on foreign places. The image invites a close look at the shared, open-air spaces where families of modest means lived, worked, and washed clothes, a side of Sicilian life that rarely appeared in tourist guidebooks of the period.
