The ferry landing at Cortland Street, on the Lower Manhattan waterfront, is the subject here, rendered with the soft, wash-like tones that make this print stand apart from Pennell's line work. Joseph Pennell, an American illustrator and printmaker who spent much of his career recording city life and industry, made this aquatint in 1908. The technique builds tone through rosin dust on the plate rather than through hard lines. This is the second state of the plate, so Pennell reworked it after early proofs, a detail worth checking when comparing impressions. The date and other details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
