Main Street in Amarillo, Texas, is the subject here, shown as a single city block rather than a broad streetscape. The caption card identifies it only as number 1224 in a series of views, and it carries no date, so any reading of the buildings' age has to be tentative. Amarillo grew quickly after the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway arrived in 1887, turning a small ranching settlement into a shipping hub for cattle and, later, wheat. Street scenes like this one from the Texas Panhandle help show how a railroad town organized its commercial core in those decades.
