Main Street in Grass Valley, a Nevada County mining town that grew up after gold was found in the Sierra foothills in the early 1850s, appears in this view issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. Only one half of the original stereograph pair survives in the Library's holdings, and the caption details come from an old card whose accuracy has not been verified. Views like this were popular parlor entertainment in the 1860s, letting viewers feel they were walking a working gold-country street from their own homes.
