Drytown, a mining settlement in Amador County in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, is the subject here, shown through its main street. The gold rush drew thousands of prospectors to this region in the early 1850s, and small towns like Drytown grew up quickly around placer and quartz mining. This albumen print is one half of a stereograph, a paired image viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect, and only this half survives in the Library's holdings. It was issued in a series titled "Gems of California Scenery," which shows how mid-1860s viewers looked to the mining west for scenes of American frontier life.
