Washington Street in Sonora, the seat of Tuolumne County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is the subject here, shown as a street scene from the mid-1860s. The Library holds only one half of what was issued as a stereographic pair, so the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave a three-dimensional effect. Sonora grew up during the Gold Rush, and by the 1860s its streets and storefronts reflected a town that had settled from mining camp into a permanent county center. Albumen prints like this one, sold as part of the "Gems of California Scenery" series, were a popular way for Californians and eastern audiences to see the state's towns and landscapes.
