Few mining views show the inside of a dump box, the wooden trough where gravel from a placer claim was washed and its gold caught behind riffles. This one comes from Columbia in Tuolumne County, a Sierra foothill town that boomed after gold was found in the region in 1850. The Library holds only one half of what was issued as a stereograph pair in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the caption card dates publication to 1866. Viewed through a stereoscope, such cards gave armchair visitors a sense of depth and place, and this one offers a close look at the equipment that drove the gold economy.
