Looking south over Nevada City, the seat of Nevada County in California's Sierra foothills, this view frames a Catholic church and the Union Hotel against Sugarloaf Mountain. The town grew quickly after gold was discovered nearby in 1849, and by the mid-1860s it was a settled mining community of churches, hotels, and hillside streets. Stereographs like this one were made in pairs and viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor pastime that gave viewers a sense of depth. The Library holds only one half of this pair.
