Few summer gatherings of the period brought a president, a governor and a cardinal into one frame, but this photograph records just that at the Catholic Summer School of America in Cliff Haven, New York. Founded in the early 1890s on the shore of Lake Champlain, the school offered lectures and discussion for Catholic adults, and visits by public officials helped draw attention to its work. The group poses at the top of a flight of steps, with President William Howard Taft, Governor Charles Evans Hughes and Cardinal James Gibbons among the state and church figures. The date of c1909 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so treat the exact occasion as approximate.
