Thomas Nast's wood engraving carries a blunt caption, "No Union upon any terms," which states its position before the viewer reaches the drawing itself. It appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on February 25, 1871, at a time when Americans were debating how far religious institutions should reach into public life, especially over public money and public schools. Nast, the magazine's leading cartoonist, used drawings like this to press readers toward a firm separation of church and state. The piece shows how weekly illustrations shaped public argument before newspapers could reproduce photographs.
