The church pictured here is San Francisco de Asis in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, a mission-style adobe building whose buttressed walls and twin-towered-looking massing have made it one of the most recognized religious structures in the Southwest. Built in the 1700s and completed around 1816, the church was a center of village life for the Hispano farming community along the Rio Grande, and its earthen walls were repaired each year by residents using traditional methods. This photograph, made sometime between 1930 and 1950 and held in the Library of Congress's Archive of Hispanic Culture collection, records the building during a period when outside interest in New Mexico's Spanish colonial architecture was growing.
