Unlike the other views of this church in the collection, this watercolor shows St. Peter's in New Kent County, Virginia, with Union soldiers in the scene, which places it in the Peninsula campaign's wartime landscape. The church, built in the early 1700s, stood near the White House estate on the Pamunkey River, a region that changed hands repeatedly as armies moved up and down the peninsula in 1862 through 1864. The artist, identified only as McIlvaine in the inscription, worked in watercolor over a graphite underdrawing, a method that let field observers record buildings quickly and in color.
