This ink and watercolor drawing shows the hall and staircase of a house built for William Pennock, as the inscription on its face identifies. It belongs to a group of designs by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the English-trained architect who settled in Virginia in 1795, and the series is labeled as buildings erected or proposed there. Latrobe's perspective views were presentation drawings meant to let clients see a finished interior before construction began. The sheet is especially useful for studying how late-eighteenth-century American architects adapted neoclassical ideas about light, proportion, and stair design to domestic settings.
