This sheet sets out the ground-floor and upper-floor plans of a house, with its rooms labeled in ink: a hall and staircase, a drawing room, a dining room, and an office, along with a separate plan of the chamber story. Benjamin Henry Latrobe drew it between 1795 and 1799, when he had recently emigrated from England and was establishing his practice in Virginia. The title, which refers to "Buildings Erected or Proposed to be Built in Virginia," shows that it belonged to a set of designs for projects in the state. Latrobe's careful plans from these years helped introduce a more formal, European-trained approach to domestic architecture in the young republic.
