Most of the Detroit Photographic Company's color views show a single street or building, but this one records First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, a congregation founded in 1629, within a few years of the town's settlement and among the oldest in the Bay Colony. The picture was made around 1902 with the photochrom process, which the Detroit company used to produce color prints from photographs by hand-prepared lithographic stones. The process was popular in the early 1900s for travel views and tourist souvenirs, so the print reflects how Americans of that era pictured their old New England towns, with their churches standing at the center of local life.
