The title places the old St. Paul's Church beside Rock Creek Cemetery's best-known monument, the Henry Adams Monument. Historian Henry Adams commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create the bronze figure, usually called *Grief*, in memory of his wife, Marian "Clover" Adams, after her death in 1885. The sculpture drew visitors to the grounds for decades. Rendered in ink and charcoal around 1918, the scene shows an early colonial parish and a late nineteenth-century cemetery standing together as the capital grew around them.
