This plate shows the Corinthian column and capital from the Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, a small monument erected around 334 BC to honor a victory in a choral contest. Its acanthus-leaf capital is among the best-known surviving examples of the Corinthian order, and Greek Revival designers of the 1800s studied it closely. Minard Lafever included this lithograph, labeled Fig. 1 with its base and shaft, in *The Beauties of Modern Architecture*, published by D. Appleton & Co. in New York in 1839, where it gave American builders a model to work from.
