Monument Park takes its name from the tall, weathered rock columns that rise from its ground, which look like carved monuments set against the sky. Denver photographer W.G. Chamberlain published the card around 1878, when the Colorado Territory was drawing settlers, railroad crews, and sightseers eager to see the mountains and their unusual landforms. As a stereograph, the picture was made with two nearly identical exposures that, viewed through a stereoscope, merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Cards like this were sold to households across the country, bringing the West's dramatic scenery into parlors far from it.
