Geneva's sculpture, catalogued as a "national monument," stands out in an album otherwise filled with views of Athens, Egypt, the Rhine, the Tyrol, and Salzburg, and the print is pasted opposite page 31. That placement suggests a traveler's souvenir compiled as a tour of Europe and the Mediterranean. Albumen prints like this one, made from paper coated with egg white and silver salts, were the standard photographic process from about 1860 to 1890. They produced sharp detail and a warm brown tone, and they were sold widely to tourists who wanted records of famous places.
