A Confederate monument stands in the foreground of this c1907 view of Bennettsville, South Carolina, with the Skye Hotel rising behind it, so the picture places a memorial to the Civil War dead beside an ordinary commercial building on the town's main street. Such monuments went up across the South in the early twentieth century, often in the years after Reconstruction ended and when local groups such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy led fundraising for them. The print was copyrighted by J.E. Spencer, a photographer whose work documents small-town life in the period, and its juxtaposition of civic memory and daily business is worth noticing.
