Few Madison hotels of the 1920s were built on the city's western edge, so this 1924 print of the Spring Hotel on Nakoma Road shows a site set apart from the downtown streets. By the mid-1920s, automobiles were making roadside lodgings along routes outside city centers more common, as travelers and local residents looked for places to stay and eat beyond the central business district. The record gives little detail about the building's owners or later history, but the photograph still records the look of a Wisconsin hotel of its era.
