Taken at the opening session of the National American Suffrage Congress at the Hotel Statler on March 24, 1919, this picture shows a women's suffrage gathering at a moment when the federal voting amendment was still pending. The copyright notice credits A.W. Sanders of St. Louis, a commercial photographer who documented events and interiors in that city during the 1910s. Congress passed the Nineteenth Amendment that June, and it was ratified in August 1920, so the scene captures a movement near its goal. Meeting-hall photographs like this one are useful evidence of how large and organized the suffrage campaign had become.
